IMMIGRANT SUPPORT ADVOCATES PLAN TO PRESENT NO 287g PETITIONS WITH HUNDREDS OF NAMES TO THE LYCOMING COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AS WELL AS TO WILLIAMSPORT'S CITY COUNCIL. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND EACH OF THOSE MEETINGS AS CONCERNED RESIDENTS OF YOUR JURISDICTION WHEN THE DATES, TIMES, AND LOCATIONS ARE ANNOUNCED.
A 287g agreement is a formal partnership between ICE and local law enforcement agencies that deputizes local police or sheriff's deputies to perform specific federal immigration enforcement duties. The petitioners urge local authorities to reject these agreements and to rescind them in communities where they might already exisit. Reasons for non-collaboration are:
- Erosion of community trust and community values that makes people fearful of reporting crimes or cooperating with police
- Resource misallocation by diverting local law enforcement time, personnel, and funds from local crime prevention and apprehension to federal immigration enforcement, which also places the City and County at risk for expensive lawsuits related to ICE actions
